Happy Paws

Happy Paws is a fast, fun and accessible physical card game designed for couples and families, with a special appeal to dog lovers. Claim dogs from your opponent to form your pairs... but every action and every request betrays what you are looking for.

Under its cute exterior, Happy Paws hides a real deduction game. You claim dogs from your opponent to complete your pairs and score points, but each request reveals your strategy. The art of the game: asking the right questions, reading between the lines, and completing your pairs before your opponent does.

How it plays

  • Ask. Claim a dog with a specific attribute from your opponent: "Give me a Playful dog". If they have one, they must give it to you.
  • Deduce. Every request reveals what the other player is after. Anticipate their plans, hide yours.
  • Place pairs. Two dogs of the same breed form a pair. The first player to place 5 pairs wins.
  • Turn the tables. Play your Action cards to break the rhythm, exploit what you have deduced, or counter your opponent's plans.

A turn is simple: draw up to 4 cards, then either make a Dog Request or play an Action card, place any pairs you have, and draw a card to end your turn. When the draw pile is empty, you draw from your opponent's hand, which opens the door to even more deduction.

Dog cards

Happy Paws dog card example, the Golden Retriever

The game contains 24 dog cards covering 12 illustrated breeds, from the Border Collie to the French Bulldog. Each breed carries 3 attributes (Playful, Stubborn, Herding dog, Intelligent...) based on a combination of real characteristics of the breed, its image in popular culture, and gameplay balancing, so dog lovers will recognize their companions.

Each card is designed to be read at a glance: the attributes are placed so they stay visible while holding a hand of cards, every breed has its own unique card color, and a fun fact about the breed adds a little charm to each card.

Action cards and the take that spirit

Happy Paws bite card example, Not at all!

The 12 Action cards spice up the game without making it frustrating: drawing from an opponent's hand, claiming their cards, or countering their plans. Some, like the "Not at all!" card shown here, are marked with a bite icon and can be played during the opponent's turn, keeping both players engaged at all times.

Rather than locking the set in stone, the current 5 Action cards are still being tuned for balance, so the exact list is likely to evolve.

Hidden depth

Happy Paws is a deduction game that is more strategic than it looks. Each question reveals information about your opponent's goals. By analyzing their requests, your cards and the cards already played, you must anticipate their plans while choosing which attributes to ask for, maximizing your chances of completing your own pairs.

The game is easy to learn in 2 minutes, plays in 15, and fits in a pocket: a true take-anywhere game with optimization, deduction and bluffing hiding under an accessible surface.

Components and expansions

  • 36 illustrated cards (75x110mm): 24 dog cards and 12 action cards
  • A foldable rules sheet
  • Optional: 2 turn-reference cards

Expansions can easily be added with new dog breeds, new attributes and new Action cards. To preserve the balance of the game, the design keeps a ratio of two dog cards for one action card, while the number of players and the number of pairs required to win can be adjusted through new rules.
